Binocular microscope

A binocular microscope is a device equipped with two eyepieces, allowing the observer to view the specimen with both eyes at once. This arrangement ensures more comfortable and less strenuous observation, especially during prolonged work, as it eliminates the need to squint one eye as with monocular microscopes with a single eyepiece. There are two basic types of binocular heads. In simpler models, the image from a single objective is merely optically split into both eyepieces, providing the observer with a flat, two-dimensional image. The second type is the so-called stereoscopic microscope, which uses two separate optical systems, one for each eye. These systems capture the object from slightly different angles, creating a three-dimensional, or 3D, image with a sense of depth. This feature is crucial for activities requiring precise manipulation of the observed object, for example in biology during dissection, in watchmaking, electronics, or during material surface inspection. The term "binocular" therefore primarily describes a design with two eyepieces for comfortable viewing.
