Camera Sensors

Located behind the lens, the sensor (sensor chip) captures the image and is one of the most important elements of a camera. You can imagine it as a removable plate with millions of points (pixels), which records light intensity and other image information (such as colour), before sending it to the processor for further processing.

Important specifications

  • Sensor Size [cm] – the larger the size, the better the resulting image
  • Sensor resolution [Mpx]

An important aspect is not only the size of the sensor, but also the number of pixels from which the sensor is composed. The larger the size of each pixel, the better picture information is transmitted. This means that a sensor of a certain size with a lower resolution is composed of pixels larger than another sensor of the same size but with higher resolution. We can assume that the first sensor will produce superior images.

Sufficient sensor specifications

  • Cameras with a resolution of 10-14 Mpx – for normal photography
  • Cameras with larger sensors – for professional photography and printing large images

CCD and CMOS sensors

Sensors are divided into two types of technology: CCD and CMOS.

Both types of sensor chips are ideal for general photography and provide great-quality final images.
