An FM (VHF) tuner is an electronic device whose purpose is to receive radio broadcasts in the very short wave band. The abbreviation FM stands for "Frequency Modulation", which is the technical way in which an audio signal is transmitted through the air. The designation VHF is the Czech equivalent for this broadcasting band. In practice, it is the same. The function of a tuner is to pick up a radio signal using an attached antenna and convert it into a low-level audio signal. This signal must then be sent to an amplifier, which amplifies it to the level needed for reproduction in speakers. The tuner itself therefore does not produce sound, it only serves as a signal source in a HiFi setup, similar to a turntable or CD player. Its design is optimized for the cleanest and highest quality reception with minimal noise and good stereo channel separation, which is crucial for faithful music reproduction.
