Radius cutter

A radius milling machine is a tool for chip machining whose main purpose is to create precisely defined curves, called radii, on the edges or corners of a workpiece. The characteristic feature of this tool is the cutting edges, which do not have a sharp tip but are shaped into a specific radius at their end. Depending on the shape of the cutter, it is possible to create either an outer curve, where the outer sharp edge is cut into an arc, or an inner curve, often referred to as a "corner radius", which is typically milled at the bottom of pockets or where two perpendicular walls meet. There is often a technical reason for using a radius cutter, as the rounded transition between the faces reduces stress concentration in the material, increasing the mechanical resistance and durability of the part. In addition to the functional aspect, the rounding also plays an aesthetic role and contributes to safety when handling the product by eliminating sharp edges. Tools can be made from a single piece of material, for example, high-speed steel or sintered carbide, or they can be fitted with interchangeable inserts. The interchangeable insert system makes it easy to replace only a small cutting part, rather than the entire tool, when the cutting edge wears out, making production more efficient.
