Single-layer softbox

A single layer softbox is a light editing tool that is mounted on a studio flash or other light source. Its purpose is to turn the small, sharp light of a flash into a large, softly glowing area. The name "single-layer" means that there is only one layer of diffuse, or light-scattering, fabric between the light source and the subject. This makes the light softer than from the flash itself, but compared to double-layer softboxes, it is slightly more contrasty and less diffused. The advantage of a single layer is less loss of light output, which means that the softbox transmits more light. This can be useful when working with weaker flashes or in situations where maximum light intensity is needed. However, one diffusion layer may not always perfectly hide the central brighter point of light, known as the "hotspot". This type of softbox is used when a slightly harder but still softened light is required to better render textures and shapes.
