While still widely available, TN is one of the older LCD display technologies. Its biggest advantages include low production costs and fast response times. Fast response means that the monitor is able to change the image quickly.
In monitors with this designation, the subpixels transmit light when at a standstill. By applying an electric current, the molecules inside the pixel turn, thus producing an image. The name Twisted Nematic technology is in reference to the process of displaying black colour, where there is a complete, helical twisting of molecules within a pixel.
