V současnosti nepřestává ani základní vývoj technologií pro umělou inteligenci. DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) se rozhodla investovat 18,6 milionu USD do výzkumu na Princeton University, který se zabývá inovacemi v miniaturizaci AI čipů. Ty jsou dnes navrhovány hlavně pro prostředí datacenter, zatímco výzkum na Princetonu se snaží o průlom v oblasti škálovatelnosti a účinnosti, který by umožnil integraci výkonné AI do přenosných zařízení, ale také do letadel a kosmických lodí.
Dva klíčové problémy: Energetická náročnost a úzké hrdlo
Dva základní problémy, které je nutné vyřešit, jsou obecná účinnost výpočtů, jež dnes vyžadují příliš mnoho energie a tudíž i výkonné chlazení, a dále úzké hrdlo (bottleneck) mezi procesory a pamětí, přes které se musí přenášet obrovské objemy dat. Řešení spočívá v opuštění osmdesát let starého paradigmatu, kdy je paměť oddělena od výpočetního jádra (core), a ve vytvoření nového typu paměti, která je sama schopná provádět výpočty (in-memory compute).
Nový přístup k výpočtům: In-memory compute
Tyto výpočty jsou poměrně jednoduché, ale nezbytné pro vyvozování v rozsáhlých neuronových modelech – typicky zahrnují jednoduché operace na takzvaných řídkých maticích (maticích, kde většina hodnot jsou nuly). Místo toho, aby procesor neustále načítal data, prováděl na nich operace a opět je ukládal, dá paměti příkaz, aby sama provedla operaci na datech v určitém rozsahu, takže se nebude nic načítat ani ukládat.
Výzvy a výhody analogových řešení
Tento specifický typ pamětí je konstrukčně složitější a podstatně dražší než klasické paměti, které postačují pro současné programy. U umělé inteligence je však úzké hrdlo tak zásadním problémem, že je efektivnější zcela změnit přístup, jakým se s daty pracuje. Zvýšená komplexita tohoto typu pamětí vede k úvahám, zda je vhodné ukládat informace do podobného typu paměti v digitální podobě, když analogová řešení by byla podstatně jednodušší – a přitom dostatečně přesná pro dané účely.
Investice DARPA do budoucnosti AI
Investice ze strany DARPA míří do oblastí, které jsou zatím vzdálené praktickému využití, ale přesto je agentura považuje za zajímavé a perspektivní z hlediska budoucnosti a zachování americké obranyschopnosti. Zatím není jasné, zda se umělá inteligence vrátí k analogovým technologiím, nebo je bude využívat alespoň částečně, ale je zcela zřejmé, že snaha o vylepšení technologií umělé inteligence je pro DARPA ve střednědobém a dlouhodobém výhledu jasnou prioritou.
