An AM tuner (SV) is a function or part of a HiFi set-up that allows you to receive radio broadcasts on medium waves. The abbreviation AM stands for "amplitude modulation", which is a method of signal transmission in which sound information is encoded into changes in the strength, or amplitude, of the radio wave. The designation SV stands for "medium wave" and specifies the particular frequency band in which this type of transmission is typically found. Medium wave broadcasting is characterised by its ability to propagate a signal over very long distances, especially at night. However, the sound quality is generally lower compared to FM broadcasting and the signal is more susceptible to interference from electrical appliances or atmospheric disturbances. The presence of an AM (SV) tuner in the device thus extends the listening possibilities to stations often focused on spoken word, news or specific music formats.
