Pinless bicycle pedals are a type of platform pedal whose tread surface is smooth or has only a slight texture without distinctive metal protrusions, referred to as "pins". The main characteristic is the absence of these pins, which in other types of pedals serve to bite into the sole of the shoe and provide grip. Due to the smoother surface, these pedals are gentler on the soles of regular shoes such as trainers or half-shoes, which could be damaged by sharp pins. The rider can also change foot position on the pedal more easily and quickly because the shoe is not fixed to the surface. This type of pedal is often used on city, trekking or children's bikes where high grip is not required for riding on rough terrain, but rather comfort and practicality for casual transfers. Their design also reduces the risk of shin injury if the foot accidentally slips.
