Carpenter's square

A carpenter's triangle is a multifunctional measuring and drawing tool in the shape of a right-angled triangle, usually made of metal to ensure durability and accuracy. One of its offshoots, i.e. the shorter sides forming a right angle, is reinforced to form what is known as a jib or stop. This rests on the edge of the material and allows perpendicular lines to be drawn quickly and accurately or the angle to be used as a guide for straight cuts, for example with a circular saw. On the butt end, the longest side, there is a scale which serves as a protractor. To use it, a corner with a pivot point, often marked 'pivot', is attached to the edge of the material and the angle is rotated until the desired angle on the scale crosses the same edge. In addition to the traditional angle scale, the roof pitch scale includes specialised roof pitch scales that allow direct drawing of angles for cuts in rafters and other roof structure elements without the need for complex calculations. Some models also have scribing notches inside the cutout to guide a pencil for quick drawing of lines parallel to the edge. The tool thus combines in one design the functions of a ruler, a 90-degree angle protractor, a protractor and a specialized jig for carpentry work.
