Certification EN 17092-3 (A) is the European standard that sets the requirements for protective motorcycle clothing. Specifically, class "A", which includes some motorcycle shirts, represents the basic level of protection. Clothing with this certification has undergone testing to verify its resistance to punctures from falling and sliding on the road, the strength of the seams and the tear resistance of the material. Class "A" is designed for urban driving or for quieter rides at lower speeds where the risk of an accident is statistically lower. It does not provide as high a level of protection as the higher AA or AAA classes, which are designed for touring or circuit riding, but it does provide proven and standardized protection well above ordinary civilian clothing. As part of this standard, the garment is required to include certified joint protectors, most commonly for the shoulders and elbows.
