Coated cutter

A coated cutter is a cutting tool whose surface is coated with a very thin but functional layer of special material. Often only a few thousandths of a millimetre thick, this coating does not serve as a paint, but fundamentally improves the machining properties of the cutter. The main benefit of the coating is an increase in surface hardness, which makes the tool much better able to resist wear and stay sharp longer. The coating also reduces the friction between the tool and the material to be removed, the so-called chip, while increasing heat resistance. This allows machining at higher speeds and temperatures, making production more efficient, while extending overall tool life. Thanks to these features, coated cutters can also be used for machining hard or difficult-to-machine materials where an uncoated tool would fail or have a very short tool life. There are many types of coatings that vary in composition and colour, for example golden "TiN" or purple-black "TiAlN" coatings, each suitable for different conditions and materials to be machined.
