Combination pedals are a solution that combines two types of pedals into one. On one side they have a classic flat platform that is suitable for riding in regular shoes. This surface is often fitted with lugs or a roughened surface to improve the grip of the shoe. On the other side, the pedal is equipped with a stepping mechanism, also referred to as an "SPD system" or generally a "clipless system". A special cycling shoe is clipped into this mechanism, which has a counter piece called a "boot" attached to the sole. The tight connection between the shoe and the pedal allows for more efficient pedalling, as the cyclist can also pull upwards on the pedal. This type of pedal thus gives the rider a choice depending on the type of ride - for short rides he can use the platform side, while for sportive or longer rides he can use the foot pedal system.
