The CPU backplate cutout is an opening in the sheet metal of the computer case where the motherboard is attached. This opening is located exactly where the processor is mounted on the motherboard. Its main function relates to the installation of the CPU cooler. Many more powerful and heavier coolers require the use of a so-called "backplate" for their mounting, which is a reinforcing plate placed on the back of the motherboard. This backplate distributes the weight and pressure of the cooler, preventing the board from bending or being damaged. Thanks to the cutout in the case, it is possible to install or replace this backplate and the entire cooler without having to remove the entire motherboard from the computer case. Access to the back of the board is thus ensured even in an assembled computer.
