A dot matrix printer is a type of printer that prints using mechanical needles that strike a ribbon to create an image on paper. It is mainly used for printing forms, receipts or multi-layered documents (e.g. transcripts), as it allows printing through several layers of paper at the same time. Dot matrix printers are durable, inexpensive to operate and suitable for continuous printing in environments such as warehouses, banks or transport companies. The disadvantages are lower print quality and higher noise levels.
