Fiber-based photo paper

Fiber-based photo paper, often referred to as "barite paper", is a classic type of photographic paper. It is based on a backing of pure paper fibres on which a layer of barium sulphate, known as baryte, is deposited. This baryte layer serves to smooth the surface and increase the whiteness, which in turn improves the brightness and sharpness of the resulting photograph. Unlike more common RC paper, which has a paper core encased in plastic on both sides, fiber-based paper has no plastic barrier and the light-sensitive emulsion is applied directly to the baryta paper substrate. Therefore, during processing, the paper absorbs water and chemicals, requiring a significantly longer washing time for their complete removal. This is key to achieving high archival stability. This characteristic and the absence of plastic, which can degrade over time, make photographs on this paper suitable for gallery, collection and archival purposes. The image on fiber-based paper appears as if it is part of the paper itself and often offers greater depth of tone, especially in black and white. Its processing and drying is more challenging and the paper has a pronounced tendency to curl.
