ISO 14443 standards

The ISO 14443 standards are an international standard that specifies how contactless smart cards and their readers communicate with each other. Although the reader may be in the category for magnetic cards, this standard applies exclusively to contactless technology, often referred to as RFID, and has nothing to do with the magnetic stripe. Thus, the card is not swiped through any slit, but only approaches the reader at a very short distance, usually within 10 centimetres. This limited distance serves as a security feature that prevents the card from being accidentally read remotely. Communication is via radio waves at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. The standard is divided into two main types, referred to as "A" and "B", which differ in the technical details of data transmission. Modern readers are usually capable of working with both types, ensuring compatibility with most cards on the market. In practice, this technology is encountered in contactless payment cards, cards for public transport or employee cards for entering buildings. Support for this standard in a POS reader therefore means that the device can process payments by attaching a card or mobile phone with NFC.
