ISO 18092 is an international standard that specifies how short-range wireless communication, known as NFC, which stands for the English term "Near Field Communication", should work. This technology allows two devices, such as a payment terminal and a contactless card or mobile phone, to exchange data when they are within a few centimetres of each other. In the context of POS systems, this standard does not refer to magnetic stripe reading, but specifically to contactless payment functionality. Modern payment terminals often combine multiple technologies, including a magnetic card reader, a chip reader and just a contactless module operating according to ISO 18092. This standard ensures that when a customer puts their card or phone to the terminal, the two devices will understand each other and be able to safely and reliably complete the payment transaction. The standard therefore unifies the communication method for contactless transactions across different device and card manufacturers.
