ISO/IEC 1180

"ISO/IEC 11801 is an international standard that specifies parameters for universal cabling systems. These systems are used for data, voice and video transmission in commercial and residential buildings. The standard therefore does not define the measuring instrument itself, but a set of technical rules and limit values against which cable testers verify the quality and performance of the installed cabling. The standard applies to both twisted pair metallic cables and fibre optic cables.

For metallic cabling, the standard defines individual ""Categories"" of components, such as Category 6A cable, and corresponding ""Classes"" for the entire installed cable channel, such as Class EA. The Class represents the performance level of the complete path from the data cabinet to the termination outlet. When measuring, the cable tester checks a number of parameters specified by this standard, such as signal attenuation, crosstalk between pairs of conductors or back-reflection. By comparing the measured values with the limits specified in ISO/IEC 11801, the instrument then evaluates whether the cabling meets the requirements for reliable network operation at a given speed."
