Neutral silicone is a type of construction sealant that is used for flexible sealing and bonding of joints. Its key feature is its chemical neutrality during curing. Unlike acetate silicones, which release acetic acid during curing and typically smell of vinegar, neutral silicone releases chemically neutral substances such as alcohol. It is this property that makes it "gentle" on sensitive materials. It does not corrode metals such as copper, zinc, lead or aluminium and does not damage the surface of materials such as concrete, masonry, natural stone or some types of plastic such as PVC. It is used for sealing joints around windows and doors, especially with plastic or metal frames, for glazing or for filling expansion joints in walls and floors. Expansion joints are intentionally created gaps that allow materials and construction to react to temperature changes without damage. Once cured, it remains permanently flexible, resisting weather, UV and temperature changes.
