An ozonator is a device used to disinfect and clean the interior of the sauna after use. It works on the principle of generating a gas called ozone, which is made up of three oxygen atoms, as opposed to the normal two-atom oxygen we breathe. This ozone is highly reactive and has strong oxidising effects. In practice, this means that when it comes into contact with micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses or fungi, it disrupts their structure and destroys them. In the same way, it also neutralises various odours, for example from sweat, by breaking down the molecules that cause them. The ozonator is run exclusively in an empty sauna, as inhaling higher concentrations of ozone is harmful to humans. Once the cleaning cycle is complete, the sauna area must be thoroughly ventilated to allow the remaining ozone to naturally break down back into safe oxygen. Its purpose is therefore to maintain the hygienic cleanliness of the sauna cabin.
