The P1 dongle is a small electronic device that connects to the so-called P1 port on modern digital electricity meters, often referred to as "smart meters". This P1 port is a communication interface that provides very detailed real-time data on electricity consumption. The role of the P1 dongle is to retrieve this information from the meter and then send it to the home network via a Wi-Fi wireless network. The user can then view this data in a clear form on a mobile or web app. This gives them an instant overview of their current consumption, lets them see how much energy their household is currently consuming and allows them to see how consumption changes, for example, when different appliances are switched on. In addition to the total consumption, the dongle can often provide data on the current grid voltage, active power or information on the validity of the high and low tariff if the user is using it. In principle, therefore, the P1 dongle converts the technical data from the meter into a comprehensible output that enables detailed and live monitoring of the household energy consumption.
