PMMA filament

PMMA filament is a printing filament for 3D printers based on a material known as polymethyl methacrylate. In everyday life, we encounter it under names such as "plexiglass" or "acrylic glass". Its main characteristic is its high optical clarity and transparency, which is why it is often used as a substitute for glass. Unlike other filaments, PMMA is very hard, strong and brittle, which means that it does not crack flexibly on a strong impact, but can shatter. The material has the advantage of being weather and UV resistant, so prints made from it will not yellow or become brittle in the sun, allowing them to be used outdoors. Printing from PMMA filament is more demanding and requires specific conditions. A high temperature nozzle and heated print pad are required to ensure the material adheres properly. The material has a strong tendency to shrink as it cools, leading to so-called "warping", where the corners and edges of the model peel away from the substrate. For this reason, it is often recommended to use an enclosed printer for printing, which maintains a stable temperature in the print area. It is used in the production of parts where transparency is required, such as electronics enclosures, lampshades, light guides or architectural models with glazed parts.
