Sleigh mount for external flash

The external flash sled attachment describes the way in which the flash is physically and electronically attached to the camera. A sled, often referred to by the English term "hot shoe", is a standardized rail on top of the camera body. The external flash is fitted with a socket on its underside that fits precisely into these sleds. Once inserted, the flash is locked in place with a locking wheel or lever to prevent it from being accidentally released. In addition to the mechanical connection, the sledge also provides electronic communication. Inside the sledge there are electrical contacts that connect to the contacts on the flash base. This connection allows the camera to instruct the flash to fire at the precise moment of exposure. In more advanced flashes, referred to as system flashes, additional information is also transmitted, for example to automatically adjust the strength of the flash according to the conditions measured by the camera, a principle known as TTL. Although the physical size of the sledge is usually standardized, the placement and function of the electronic contacts varies between camera manufacturers.
