A slotted spoon is a kitchen utensil that takes the form of a large, shallow spoon or ladle with holes. Its main function is to separate solid ingredients from the liquid in which they are boiled or fried. The holes allow the liquid, such as water, broth, or oil, to drain back into the pot while the food remains on the spoon. It is used, for example, for removing boiled dumplings, pasta, halušky, or vegetables from boiling water. It also serves for safely removing fried foods, such as fries or doughnuts, from hot oil. Although its name refers to "skimming foam" from soups and broths, a mesh skimmer is more suitable for removing fine coagulated protein, while the slotted version is better for collecting larger pieces. It is made of materials resistant to high temperatures, most commonly stainless steel or special plastic.
