SPD-SL (road) locks

SPD-SL locks, often referred to as "trunks", are components that are mounted on the sole of special road cycling shoes. They are used to firmly connect the sneaker to a compatible SPD-SL pedal. This connection ensures a more efficient transfer of power when pedalling, as the cyclist can not only push downwards but also pull upwards on the pedal. At the same time, it keeps the foot in a stable and optimal position. These locks feature a wide and stable base that helps to distribute the pressure evenly on the foot, which is advantageous during long rides. They use a standard three-bolt system to attach to the truss. A crucial parameter when selecting SPD-SL locks is their so-called "float", which translates to side clearance. This clearance indicates how many degrees you are free to turn your heel sideways even when you are firmly locked into the pedal. There are three basic colour variations. Yellow locks offer the most clearance, usually 6 degrees, and are therefore the most common choice for most cyclists as they allow more natural movement and are more tolerant of less precise adjustments. Blue locks are a compromise with less play, typically 2 degrees. Red locks have no lateral play and the foot is completely fixed in the pedal. This type is designed primarily for experienced riders with a precision set-up. The locks will wear with use and should be checked regularly and replaced in the event of significant wear to maintain safe and reliable clamping function.
