A suspension mount, often called a "spider" because of its appearance, is a special type of mount designed to hold a microphone. Its main purpose is to isolate the microphone from mechanical vibrations and shocks that would otherwise be transmitted through the microphone stand. These vibrations can be generated, for example, when walking around the room, tapping on a table or handling the stand. The microphone is not fixed in the stand, but is suspended by a system of flexible cables. It is this elastic part that absorbs most of the shocks before they reach the sensitive microphone body. The result is a clearer sound recording without unwanted low-frequency noises such as rumbling or various shocks that would otherwise be audible in the recording. This type of mount is often used with condenser and other more sensitive microphones that are more susceptible to the transmission of such noises.
