A countersink is a drilling tool designed to create conical or cylindrical recesses. This process creates a shallow depression that allows the fastener head to be at or below the surface of the material. This reduces the formation of sharp edges around the hole and allows the heads of screws or bolts to be recessed into the material in a neat and aesthetic manner. Countersinks are used, for example, in the woodworking and metalworking industries where aesthetic and functional embedment of fasteners is required.
