Walnut (head)

A nut, often referred to as a socket, is an interchangeable attachment that fits onto tools such as a ratchet, torque wrench or various types of tighteners. It is used to loosen and tighten bolts and nuts. It has a hole at one end with an internal profile that exactly matches the shape and size of the head of the bolt or nut. The most common profile is a hexagon, which provides a firm grip, or a twelve-point, which makes it easier to fit the extender in tight spaces. At the other end is a square hole, known as a "drift square", whose size is given in inches, such as 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2". This size must match the square on the tool to which the nut is attached to ensure compatibility between them. Nuts are also available in extended versions for use with countersunk bolts or long threaded nuts.
