Wedge cut blade

The wedge-shaped cut of the razor blade is a profile that continuously tapers from the spine towards the blade, forming a "V" or wedge shape in cross-section. This full construction without any bending makes the blade more massive, heavier and very stiff. This means that it does not bend when shaving and provides a different feel when in contact with the skin than other types of blades. This is in contrast to the more common hollow-cut, which has a recessed blade between the spine and the blade and is therefore thinner and more flexible. When shaving with a wedge cutter, the user does not usually feel such feedback and does not hear the typical 'singing' of the razor when cutting the beard that is characteristic of hollow cutters. Sharpening, or honing, of such a razor can be more challenging because the entire surface of the cut is on the grindstone and more material must be removed to create a sharp bevel, which requires maintaining a precise and stable angle. This type of burr is historically older and the choice between it and a hollow burr depends on the barber's personal preference for weight, stiffness and overall shaving feel.
