Wind protection is an accessory used to suppress unwanted noise caused by airflow. When wind hits the sensitive part of the microphone directly, loud, low-frequency rumbling and crackling is produced in the audio recording, which degrades the recording. The basic protection is a foam, or foam sleeve, which is effective against light breezes or sharp exhalations of air when speaking, so-called clapping sounds. For outdoor recording with stronger winds, a furry protector is used, which has been called a "deadcat" because of its appearance. Its long artificial fibres dissipate the wind's energy before it reaches the microphone. This creates a layer of still air around the microphone pickup, allowing the desired sound, such as speech, to be recorded without the disturbing roar of the wind. It is often used in combination with a foam sleeve to increase efficiency.
