Marta Knauerová is the author of many successful books for children and as a botanist she also has several interesting books about herbs and mushrooms in her portfolio. Now her magnum opus, a novel from the Rudolphine era, Life for a penny, death for two, is published. A book full of suspense, mystery and also lessons, about old recipes, rituals, about magic and alchemy, about the miraculous power of green pharmacy, i.e. herbs, when they are in good hands of experienced herbalists and goddesses. There are also interesting personal stories of historical figures of the time. The book is also available as an audiobook in the form of an excellent performance by Ivana Jirešová. I listened to the audio book literally in one breath. I learned a lot of interesting things about alchemical Prague during the reign of Rudolf II. or I clarified things I knew, but not in depth and context. I was amazed at the plethora of herbal recipes, potions and incantations for pain, sorrows, carnal pleasures, for intrigues, for forbidden love and for sale. I would definitely recommend the book to read or listen to and would strongly advocate for a continuation of the story.
