The car was flagging up error messages for a bit, but once the power bank's battery hit 60%, the errors disappeared and the starter finally engaged. The car then started on the first attempt. Once plugged into the mains, the battery level instantly jumped from 60% to 83% and then charged at the usual speed.
Works even on a completely flat battery
The manual could be more detailed, ideally it should also describe exactly what the device is doing so you don't have to feel nervous that you're doing something wrong. The quickly dropping battery percentage doesn't help peace of mind either.

On the back, it says 44.4Wh in small print, which, when converted from 12V, comes out to about 3,660mAh.
