HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is a standard for High Dynamic Range (HDR) video recording. High Dynamic Range (HDR) allows for capturing and displaying significantly more detail in both the darkest and brightest parts of an image simultaneously, which more closely mimics human vision. The specificity of HLG lies in its hybrid nature, combining two different image encoding methods into a single signal. For modern HDR displays, it utilizes a logarithmic curve (the "Log" part) to transmit extended luminance information, while for older Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) displays, it uses a traditional gamma curve (the "Gamma" part). Thanks to this, HLG recording is backwards compatible, meaning the same video file can be played on both HDR and older SDR televisions, where it will appear as a standard video without the need for special adjustments.
