Sponge

The soldering sponge is used to clean the soldering iron tip during work. During soldering, residues of tin and burnt flux are deposited on the hot tip, forming an oxidized layer. This layer of dirt prevents proper heat transfer from the tip to the parts being soldered and impairs the adhesion of the new tin. Before use, the sponge should be moistened with clean water, ideally distilled water, to prevent scale build-up. The sponge should not be soaked, only wet. Wiping the hot tip on the damp surface of the sponge will quickly remove the dirt. This allows the tip to maintain a clean and well-tinned surface, allowing efficient heat transfer and the formation of quality solder joints. It is a sponge made of a material, usually cellulose, that resists short-term contact with the high temperature of the tip.
