RO filter

An RO filter is a water purification device that uses a technology called reverse osmosis. It is based on a semi-permeable membrane, which is a material with microscopic pores. These pores are small enough to allow water molecules to pass through, but most other substances such as salts, minerals, heavy metals, bacteria or viruses are trapped. The way the process works is that the pressure from the water line pushes the water against this membrane. The clean water, referred to as 'permeate', passes through the membrane and is channelled for further use. Pollutants that have been filtered out remain on the other side of the membrane and are discharged into the waste water along with some of the water. This creates two streams of water: one cleaned and one waste, which washes away the contaminants. Thanks to this technology, the filter can remove a wide range of contaminants from the water, including nitrates, chlorine, pesticides and drug residues. Because the membrane traps almost all dissolved substances, it also removes beneficial minerals such as calcium and magnesium from the water. Some reverse osmosis systems are therefore supplemented with a so-called mineralization cartridge. This cartridge is placed behind the main membrane and its function is to add selected minerals back into the purified water, thereby modifying its taste and replenishing its mineral composition.
