The Specific Category is one of three main categories of drone operations established by European Union legislation, alongside the "Open" and "Certified" categories. It covers flights that present a medium level of risk, exceeding the limits of the Open Category, but not reaching a degree that would require certification of both the drone and the operator. To operate in this category, an "Operational Authorisation" must be obtained from the national aviation authority, which in the Czech Republic is the Civil Aviation Authority. This authorisation is issued based on a risk assessment of the specific intended flight. The operator must perform a risk analysis using a methodology such as SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) and propose measures to mitigate these risks. Typical examples of flights in the Specific Category include Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights, the operation of drones heavier than 25 kg, or the dropping of articles.
