Stripbox is a specific type of softbox whose name is derived from its shape, which resembles a narrow strip or band. Unlike conventional square or octagonal softboxes, which produce a wide and flat area of soft light, a stripbox produces a narrow and elongated beam of light. This characteristic predestines it for specific purposes. It is often used to create what is known as 'contour light', referred to in English as 'rim light'. When placed sideways and slightly behind the subject, such as a person or product, it creates a line of light at the edge of the subject, effectively separating it from the background and adding spatial depth to the image. It works similarly as a hair light in portraits. Due to its length, it is also suitable for lighting the entire figure, where, when positioned vertically, it can evenly illuminate the model from head to toe without light leaking unnecessarily to the sides. In product photography, it is used to create long and narrow reflections on shiny objects such as bottles, emphasizing their shape. For even more precise light control, a honeycomb, which is a grid that directs the light beam more precisely and reduces scattering, can be fitted to the stripbox.
