LP Record Getz's supposed elegance seems at odds with Peterson's onslaught of notes. And yet, it doesn't sound that way at all. When it comes to this record, everyone talks about the ballad medley because it's one of the few moments we get to hear Getz. By the end of the album, the picture changes with tracks like 'Tour's End', 'Bronx Blues', and 'Blues for Herky', and the picture is very different. Then you start to hear the throb of the tenor more and more in the background.
LP Record "Blues-A-Plenty" is a classic jazz album by legendary alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, released in 1958. This album showcases Hodges' masterful tone and lyrical phrasing, solidifying his status as one of the foremost saxophone voices in the jazz canon. The record features a collection of tracks that blend bluesy undertones with sophisticated harmonies, including the smooth and iconic "Satin Doll", a testament to Hodges' long-standing collaboration with Duke Ellington. The poignant "Gone With The Wind" and the emotive "Don't Take Your Love From Me" highlight Hodges' ability to convey deep emotion through his instrument.
LP Record The album "My Favourite Things" was released in March 1961 and was the first album on which John Coltrane played soprano saxophone in addition to his tenor saxophone. His soprano plays the lead in two of the album's four songs, including an unforgettable rendition of the title track, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical The Sound of Music. An edited version of the fourteen-minute original became a radio hit in the spring of that year. The song's success helped introduce Coltrane to a wider audience, while the album went on to inspire later generations of fans.
LP Record Ella Fitzgerald's visit to Berlin comes in the middle of a long series of "Songbook" recordings, on which she collaborated with top orchestras led by Buddy Bregman, Nelson Riddle, Bill Doggett, Marty Paich, Frank DeVol and others. However, it seems plausible that the singer's outstanding vocal abilities are best showcased in a small group setting. Of course, this also meant that musicians like pianist Paul Smith, with whom she also recorded "The Intimate Ella" at the time, were always in her shadow. Guitarist Jim Hall is better known for his own work, while bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks and drummer Gus Johnson combine the strengths of flexible swing and tight rhythmic control.
LP Record When "Forbidden Fruit" was released on the Colpix label in 1961, Nina Simone's popularity was only just beginning to grow, reaching its peak several years later. She was only 28, but her amazing voice was already fully developed, making it easy to predict a long career that would establish her as one of the most important singers in jazz history. In the years that followed, her music and her commitment to the Civil Rights Movement would catapult her into the ranks of the most influential figures in African-American music. Even on the album "Forbidden Fruit", she reveals herself as a stunning interpreter and a formidable pianist.
LP Record Lady in Satin is Billie Holiday's last great hit and her penultimate album. Although she made several live recordings after this Columbia album and even recorded a second album with Ray Ellis for MGM, none were as enduring as Lady in Satin. Billie herself loved this album. Most jazz fans consider Lady in Satin to be Billie Holiday's last great work. The album was included in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".
LP Record As with many artists, Peterson's reputation has been tarnished by the very things he most admired. There was more than just a dash of Chopin in him, and this is clearly evident in this beautiful collection of Cole Porter melodies. Much like Ella Fitzgerald, Cole Porter seems to be the ideal source material for Peterson, an unbeatable alliance of verbal and musical dexterity that demands the improviser find musical equivalents for the glittering rhymes. Peterson's rhythmic flair and legendary talent are outstanding features of these performances. Most remarkable of all, however, is the irresistible swing of the group, whose infectious energy breathes new life into these familiar songs.
LP Record Tony Bennett's 1959 album "In Person!" is a live jazz record that showcases his incredible vocal range and talent. The album features jazz greats like Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, and all the tracks are live recordings from various performances. A must-listen for jazz fans and Bennett enthusiasts alike, the album is a testament to Bennett's incredible talent and longevity in the music industry.
LP Record This album, a collaboration between Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, was released in 1963. A blend of jazz and blues, it's a superb example of the two artists' styles coming together. The album was critically acclaimed and is essential listening for any fan of jazz and blues.
LP Record Lady Sings The Blues is an album by Billie Holiday, released in 1956. The album is a compilation of Holiday's recordings from the 1940s. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.
LP Record Little Girl Blue (also known as My Baby Just Cares for Me), presented here in both stereo and a rare mono version, is Nina Simone's debut album and very first studio recording. At the age of 25, it brought her huge success and launched a fabulous career that resulted in over 80 studio recordings. It features timeless classics such as "I Loves You Porgy" and "My Baby Just Cares For Me".
LP Record Louis Armstrong's Recording Together For The First Time is a 1961 album featuring Louis Armstrong and his All Stars. The album includes performances of jazz and blues standards.

LP Record Few musicians embody the romantic, and ultimately tragic, jazz figure as perfectly as Chesney “Chet” Baker (1929–1988). Untrained yet eloquent, Baker's myth as a musician and bon vivant who somehow managed to survive for almost six decades only enhanced one of the most compelling trumpet styles and ingenious approaches to jazz singing. Now, his four albums recorded with Riverside Records are being reissued: "Chet Baker Sings: It Could Happen To You", "Chet Baker Plays The Best Of Lerner And Loewe", "Chet", and "In New York". The matrices were cut from the original analogue master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.
LP Record As principal participant Gerry Mulligan described in one of the essays in the CD booklet, the Miles Davis Nonet was born in Gil Evans's basement flat, who at the time was highly regarded among musicians (though little-known to the public) as Claude Thornhill's chief arranger.
LP Record Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud, known in Germany as "Lift to the Scaffold", is a legendary crime film that remains captivating even after 60 years. Louis Malle's 1958 masterpiece, with stellar performances by Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet, is an absolute classic of the genre. It includes new, specially prepared liner notes by PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ author BRIAN MORTON and the renowned Paris JAZZ MAGAZINE. MILES DAVIS features on trumpet on all tracks, plus: Side A: Film Soundtrack: Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Frantic/Lift to the Scaffold): BARNEY WILEN, tenor saxophone, RENÉ URTREGER, piano, PIERRE MICHELOT, double bass, KENNY CLARKE, drums, Paris, 4th and 5th December 1957.
LP Record The French guitarist, composer, and bandleader Jean "Django" Reinhardt (1910–53) is considered one of the founders of European jazz. His music uniquely blended New Orleans jazz, French waltzes, and traditional Romani playing styles to create what is now known as gypsy swing. Alongside typical jazz rhythms, this style is characterised by chord effects and moods typical of modern classical music (Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel). Reinhardt's remarkable technique, which was partly a result of an injury to his fretting hand, as well as his harmonic understanding and sense of rhythm, made him not only a unique soloist but also an outstanding accompanist. This was all despite the fact he could not read music.
LP Record Come Fly with Me showcases Sinatra at his untouchable zenith: his manner is seductive, his promises romantic and, as the track titles suggest, his connections are truly international. The best albums are those where the sum of the individual parts creates a whole that tells a story, and Come Fly with Me is arguably one of the finest examples of this.
