A modified sinusoid is a simplified stepped or rectangular waveform that only approximates the shape of an ideal sinusoid. The advantage is the low cost of the converters and the basic functionality for resistive loads such as conventional light bulbs, heating coils or some simple chargers. The disadvantage is the higher harmonic distortion caused by transformer hum, motor heating, reduced efficiency, and possible interference with radio and audio equipment. Switching power supplies with active PFC, refrigerators with asynchronous motors, pumps and audio amplifiers may operate less well or overheat on such a waveform. Long-term operation may reduce the lifetime of connected equipment due to thermal and electromagnetic losses. Modified sine wave is therefore more suitable for light duty and short term use.
