Petrol Chainsaws

Petrol chainsaws are suitable for preparing firewood and working in the field, away from electricity. Compared to an electric chainsaw it is powerful yet harder to maintain, but it's possible to use it in all types of weather. They differ in their performance and length of bars.

Petrol chainsaws can be divided into the following usages.

  • Hobby - suitable for occasional use, lower power and minimal maintenance. Due to lower performance it is recommended to choose the length of the bar around 37 cm.
  • Farmer - suitable for the preparation of firewood, timber harvesting in the forest and orchard maintenance. This corresponds to a higher power and bar length up to 50 cm.
  • Professional - designed especially for logging, which corresponds to higher performance and perfect for technical processing. They are very durable and have excellent suspension that absorbs vibrations.

Parameters important for the selection of a petrol chainsaw

The length of the bar

Proportional to the diameter of the timber, You can choose between 33 to 50 cm. The longer the bar is, the more power the motor draws. Longer bars are suitable for logging, but for the classic preparation of firewood sufficient length is minimum 35 cm.

  • 40 cm - saw suitable for occasional use and preparation of firewood.
  • Over 40 cm - saw for harvesting in the forest and orchard maintenance.

Performance and stroke volume

Performance ranging from 1.4 to 2.5 kW is sufficient for cutting firewood. If you plan on mining in the woods or long-term work, it is advisable to choose a saw with a power greater than 2.5 kW.

Another indicator is the performance data and saw stroke volume - the one used for hobby users should be around 40 cc whilst farmers should aim for about 60 cc. Professional chainsaws can reach up to 120 cc.

Weight

Ranges between 4 and 8 kg. Generally, efficient saws are heavier and more robust. If you are planning to cut all day, every bit of extra weight will be more noticeable. 

Other useful properties of petrol chainsaws

  • Fuel pump - starting will be considerably easier with a fuel pump.
  • Clamping tool-free chain - For clamping, or replacing the chain you do not need any tools. It is therefore a system that greatly speeds up the work.
  • Suspension - basic models used for damping have rubber silent blocks, the most advanced however have springs that help minimise vibration better.
  • Electrodynamic brake - can stop the chain in a fraction of a second, especialy useful for safety.

Standard equipment when operating chainsaws is protective equipment such as gloves , goggles or face shield . Especially with noisy petrol models we highly recommend protective headphones .
