A multimeter is an electronic device designed to measure current, voltage or electrical resistance. Some can also measure other quantities. Generally, the main difference between the individual models is their measurement accuracy, features, and measurement range.

Multimeter types

  • Digital multimeters - show measurements directly on the display. They are practical, versatile and offer a variety of special features such as a voltmeter, ammeter, and many more.
  • Analogue multimeters - have an analogue meter movement. They are more resistant against radio interference, but their precision and reading accuracy is limited compared to digital multimeters.
  • Clamp multimeters - allow you to work in tight and hard to reach places. You can use them to measure current, voltage, frequency and temperature

What to focus on when choosing a multimeter

Measurement range

Indicates the maximum and minimum limit of a multimeter measurement capacity. Measuring higher current and other quantities beyond the specified range can damage the device.

Measurement accuracy

Indicates the exact multimeter precision when measuring the particular quantity. Greater accuracy provides better measurement results.

  • 1 to 0.25% - can be found in more expensive digital multimeters.
  • 2 to 0.5% - cheaper digital and analogue multimeters.

Useful features and functions

  • Automatic range change - the device selects the maximum range automatically to ensure accurate measurement.
  • MIN/MAX - records the minimum and maximum voltage that the multimeter is reading.
  • Graphical display - displays the measured values graphically (for example in columns).
