Smartwatches are basically an extension of your smartphone. They display important information and notifications and allow you to control some smartphone functions.

Key parameters when choosing a smartwatch

Phone compatibility

Just like smartphones and tablets, smartwatches too require an operating systems. Aside from the differences in the user environment, different smartwatches are compatible with different brands and smartphone models. Knowing the operating system of a smartwatch is also important because it tells you what apps or add-ons you can install. Before buying a smartwatch, we highly recommend checking whether the watch is fully or partially compatible with your smartphone.

Smartwatches for Android phones

These watches run on the Android or Android Wear operating system. You can also encounter alternative operating systems designed to work with Android, such as Tizen, which is the OS of choice for the Samsung Gear S smartwatches.

Smartwatches for Apple iPhone

Apple has its own smartwatches, aptly named Apple Watch. They use watchOS and are among the few smartwatch models compatible with iPhones.

Some smartwatch manufacturers have developed their own operating systems and their products are compatible with iOS, Android, or Windows Phone. Most smartwatches can also function independently without any phone connection, albeit with some restrictions.

Battery life

Unfortunately, the battery life is still the Achilles’ heel of any smartwatch. The average battery life is 2-3 days on a single charge, but for most models you should expect something closer to a single day if the watch is in active use. If you want to be sure that your watch will work the next day, you should recharge it every night after coming home from work or school. Battery life is affected by the number of functions and sensors the watch has, display size and its type, and whether GPS is turned on or not. The most advanced models list a battery life of 10 days or more.

Functions and hardware equipment

Just like with smartphones, hardware parameters alone don’t guarantee speed and responsivity. The most important factor is how well the device works as a whole and whether its hardware matches the software. This is not something a spec sheet can tell you, so we recommend reading some reviews or trying the watch out personally.

What functions does a smartwatch offer?

Phone connectivity

Although almost all smartwatches can work independently and show time and date at least, you can’t use their features to their full extent without pairing them with a smartphone. Depending on the model, you can then access the following smartwatch features:

  • Display most notifications from your phone; some models also let you manage them.
  • View events on your calendar.
  • Take calls without having to retrieve the phone from your pocket.
  • Play music.
  • Read text messages.
  • Browse social networks and the web.

Some models even have a SIM card slot, which lets them operate independently of the smartphone.

Heart rate monitor

Most smartwatch models include a heart rate monitor of some sort. The problem is that their measurement is accurate only when you are sitting still. If you are interested in something that could monitor your heart rate continuously while jogging or doing other sports activities, we recommend buying a watch that comes with a chest strap or is compatible with it. Heart rate monitoring using a chest strap tends to be more accurate.

Activity tracking

A smartwatch can detect the type of activity you are doing based on information from sensors such as a gyroscope, accelerometer, heart rate monitor, or GPS.  It collects the data and then either analyses it or sends it to be evaluated by an app on your phone. You can also view your data via the app's web interface. You can keep track of the number of steps walked, distance travelled, time, and heart rate. Models with built-in GPS additionally collect data about your position, so you can see your exact route in the mobile app. A smartwatch can also evaluate your sleep quality based on the data gained from the heart rate sensor and gyroscope.

Resistance

Pay attention to the specifications on how waterproof or dustproof the watch is. Some smartwatches can’t stand any water contact at all, while others let you dive 10 m deep or deeper and have no problem coping with dust or mud. If your watch is rated IP67 or higher, you can safely wear it almost anywhere.

Design

Smartwatches have been on the market for several years and the range of their features is constantly expanding. You can find smartwatches of different shapes, sizes, colours, and materials. There are models for fans of the classic watch design and those who like modern shapes and large touchscreens. If the appearance of the watch is particularly important to you, some manufacturers offer a wide selection of differently coloured straps and various materials.

Buying a smartwatch?

First, try to answer the following questions
  • What features do I expect my smartwatch to have?
  • Do I need physical activity tracking or not?
  • How much do I care about the design?
