Nine Inch Nails: Pretty Hate Machine
LP Record - It also came to pass: Pretty Hate Machine was released on 20th October 1989 – and later became one of the first independent albums to go platinum. It was born at a time when 'Like a Prayer' and 'Eternal Flame' were the year's biggest hits. And although Reznor can't quite stand by this album today, it was the initial spark for a mainstream revolution. Suddenly, the charts featured music that dealt with teenage angst, depression, doubts about God and sexual energy. It was completely unheard of, and had an exceptionally unsettling sound.

The Cocteau Twins' sound, which oscillates between dream pop and gothic rock, and Fraser's exceptional voice have influenced countless bands to this day. In 1990, Cocteau Twins released their sixth album, "Heaven Or Las Vegas". It became their biggest commercial success, reaching the top ten in the UK, and many magazines later named it one of the best albums of the 90s. The head of the 4AD record label at the time, Ivo Watts-Russell, even considers "Heaven Or Las Vegas" to be the best 4AD album ever.

Fugees: The Score Ltd Clr
LP Record - By 1996, the world had seen many hip-hop blockbusters. Some of these albums were pop, others were gangster rap, and some were given the slightly superior label of "socially conscious". Few records, if any, ticked all three boxes, and none were more artistically or commercially successful than the second album from Fugees. The instrumentation is tailor-made for rock fans, the rather obvious Bob Marley cover for stoners and university students, and the lead vocalist Lauryn Hill's vocals are soulful enough for middle-aged listeners who are still on the fence about hip-hop. Clef, Hill, and the third member Pras Michael – the man who brought it all together in the late 80s.
