The album was Metallica's first release on Elektra after moving from their long-time label Warner Bros. Records. Five singles were released from the album which made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart, including the number-one hits "Until It Sleeps" and "The Unforgiven II". The album marked a change in the band's sound, moving from the thrash metal of their previous albums to a harder rock style.
