Office Chairs

Office chairs are perfectly suited for both the office and home. They are adjustable and typically allow you position back support and armrests. When buying an office chair, consider how much time you spend sitting, what do you do, and then choose the mechanism and accessories accordingly.

What to focus on when buying an office chair?

Mechanism type

  • Rocking mechanism is the simplest solution. It allows the seatpan and backrest move together in a “rocking chair” motion. Neither the seatpan nor the backrest angle are adjustable. They are not suitable for long everyday sitting.
  • Asynchronous mechanism means that the seatpan and backrest angles can be adjusted independently, usually with three separate levers - chair height, backrest tilt, and seatpan angle. If you spend several hours sitting in your office on a daily basis, this type is ideal.
  • Synchronous mechanism allows you to adjust the backrest into several positions depending on the seat incline, which means that the seatpan and backrest are linked and the angles adjust in a fixed ratio. Suitable for long daily sessions in front of a computer.

Accessories

  • A headrest provides much needed support for your head and neck, ideal for long sitting.
  • Lumbar support supports your body in the lumbar region and allows for a healthier sitting position.
  • Armrests are crucial if you want increased comfort. Some have adjustable armrest heights, others are fixed.
  • Wheels should be appropriate for the type of flooring. For soft surfaces, select hard plastic wheels; for hard floors, choose softer rubberised ones. If you use your chair on different floor coverings, choose universal wheels or a chair mat.

Base material

The base is the key component of an office chair. A standard plastic base is both the cheapest and most common. For heavier people or frequent use, we recommended choosing a more durable material - chrome, aluminium, or some other metal.

If you want your office chair to work as it should,
pay close attention to the maximum weight capacity as specified by the manufacturer.

Upholstery fabric

Upholstery is commonly available in three types - leather, mesh, and fabric. A leather chair tends to make the best impression, but it is not particularly comfortable, especially in hot summer months. Mesh chairs have great ventilation, so if heat is your concern, this is the way to go. Fabric upholstery is a compromise, as it does not suffocate you, but also provides some warmth.
