It might look a bit like a toy, but the sound is brilliant. The oscillators can be switched off and the unit can be used as a digital multi-effects unit for other instruments; that’s the mode I mainly use it in, and the effects sound great. The controls are quite challenging; the minimalist design takes its toll, and you need to bear that in mind. The sequencer, touch keyboard and built-in speaker are very limited, but it’s nice to have them there for trying out sounds and experimenting. Korg’s software is excellent; it allows you to view the current settings, which is invaluable given the device’s confusing user interface. The software also lets you download and upload settings, which is brilliant too – without that, it probably wouldn’t be very useful. USB-C connectivity is great, but powering it via USB can be a bit of a hassle, especially if you plug it into a PC – you need a good-quality adapter. The absolute best feature is the open-source hardware and software; you can programme or download oscillators and effects, or very easily make hardware modifications, such as soldering on a rechargeable battery with a charger. The price is what it is; from one point of view, it’s quite a lot given that it’s a modular system made up of boards, but from another, it’s not that much for a very high-quality and expandable synthesiser/multi-effects unit.
