At first, I avoided wireless ANT+ lights because of reliability issues, but otherwise it’s simply impossible to control the light whilst riding. The deal-breaker for me was the battery level displayed on the cycle computer, because other lights, for example, would stop working in the middle of a ride without me even realising it. Once paired (press button A once and THEN hold it down for 3 seconds until it flashes blue – it took me 15 minutes to work that out) and when you switch on the cycle computer, it turns on almost immediately, which is absolutely brilliant and convenient. The only thing I’d criticise about the lamp is perhaps how sturdy it feels, as it looks more like a designer piece of electronics than something that won’t break if you drop it. For that price, I expected the light to perhaps connect to the Garmin but be passive, so its functionality far exceeded my expectations. This is partly down to the product information on Alza, which, in my view, does not highlight the device’s ANT+ features sufficiently. You won’t find a better smart light (without a camera or radar).
Design (elegant)
An LED light illuminating the rear wheel from below (enabling the driver to identify a cyclist pedalling even in complete darkness)
Wireless control via a cycle computer (tested with the Garmin Edge 530; compatible with the Lightning Network)
Strength of lighting
Premium packaging
Exceptional battery life during normal use
Low battery notification
Counterintuitive pairing with Garmin Edge
Neither the charger nor the cable is included in the pack
It is difficult to distinguish between standby mode and being switched off completely, or ‘in transit’ mode
