Mechanical image stabilization is a technology that suppresses the blurring of photos and the shaking of videos caused by unwanted camera movement, such as hand tremors. It works on the principle of physically shifting optical elements inside the camera or lens. Gyroscopic sensors detect even the smallest movements, and the control unit immediately issues a command to shift a part of the optical system to compensate for this movement and keep the image stable. There are two main types. With in-lens stabilization, often referred to as OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), a group of lenses moves. With in-body camera stabilization, known as IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization), the image sensor itself moves instead. This compensation allows for shooting handheld with longer exposure times without blurring the image, which is particularly useful in poorer lighting conditions. For video, it ensures smoother and more stable footage.
