The edge milling machine is a specialized type of electric milling machine designed primarily for the machining of material edges. It is a smaller and lighter version of the classic top milling machine, which is designed for comfortable one-handed operation. Its main use is to accurately mill, round or chamfer the edges of board materials such as particleboard or solid wood. It is often used to trim overlapping furniture edge strips after they have been glued in place, so that the edge fits perfectly to the surface of the board. It is also used to create decorative profiles, shallow grooves or chamfers on the edges of products. Its compact size and lighter weight allow for more precise work on details where handling a larger router would be difficult. Small milling tools, so-called shank cutters, are clamped in the milling machine and their shape determines the final appearance of the machined edge.
